Drawn exclusively from the permanent collection of The Museum at FIT, this exhibition is a must-see for students and lovers of fashion alike.

From eveningwear to streetwear, Paris to NYC, this exhibition covers the diverse influences and perspectives of several generations of internationally-acclaimed designers from the 1950s to present.

In this exhibition, works by both unheralded trailblazers and new talents tell the story of struggle and progress in the modern-day fashion industry.

There are lessons to be learned. But most of all, art to be appreciated! Marvel at the exquisite craftsmanship of designers trained by unnamed dressmakers as well as couturiers like Givenchy and Balmain. Feel the urban musicality embedded in pieces worn at Studio 54 and on the streets of Harlem. Applaud the underdogs who took on the French establishment as well as those who embraced multicultural influences, sourcing and production to create their signature aesthetics.

Oh, and as the show title might’ve given away, all of the featured designers are black!

This is a unique exhibition and opportunity to feel inspired by a masterclass from the African diaspora. But don’t let race limit your perspective or expectations. Expect the unexpected from these #BlackFashionDesigners!

The exhibition is free and open to the public until May 16, 2017.
