Tales from the Diaspora

Our Man in Accra, Ghana

Krull asked Stevie Nii-Adu Mensah, who recently moved back home to Accra from Stockholm, to now and again share with us what’s going on and how life is moving back home after decades living abroad. Stevie is a creative soul working in music, dance and theater.

The Chale Wote Festival is an amazing yearly event that takes place in Jamestown, the fishing town of the Ga people. Chale Wote means ‘Friend, come let’s go” in the local ga language and is also what sandals are called here. CEO and founder Mantse, with partner Sionne, has in the past few years developed this common expression into a full-fledged festival showcasing Art, Drama, Music and Film with Ghanaian connotations. The Festival is in August and the theme this year is “Spirit Robot”.

I will be performing my monologue and play “It’s Cold Oo” at the Chale Wote Festival that starts in Accra, Jamestown on the 15th of August.

The story is about a young King who is forced by his village chief to leave Ghana for a while due to the country going through it’s worst ever economic crisis. He is excited but at the same time terrified, and battles his insecurities and fears in this comedic drama. The play will be touring starting from September.
